Suburban land makes good farmland in my area. In Chicago, there is plenty of land here and there to stick a garden, and not just some hyper-expensive reinforced rooftop garden. The issue is people wanting to do it. We are quickly coming into an era where they will have no choice but to turn available land into food growing land, but because people are the way they are, I see a great many of them starving while depressed and confused. I was at the grocery store and a miserable woman and her mother got pissy with the cashier because they could not "afford" three bottles of Juicy Juice for a four year old child on their benefits card. The grandmother, mother, and young child were obese. There are many, many poor people who subsist on frozen convenience food, never understanding that if you don't cook, you spend most of your precious money on food that makes you fat, broke, miserable, and sick.
